No guns please- greeaat.
After Keefe skated the DC plaza one last time for his birthday, we, the sister wives, made tuna sandwiches in the parking lot, the classy ladies that we are.
Hitting the road by two, we passed through Indiana, a land full of WalMarts, dead raccoons and not much else. We rolled through the heart of Chicago at dusk, navigating through hectic four lane traffic, relying on teamwork for navigation and Chicago native Kanye bumping on the Queen Bee's speakers to bring us into the city in style. Spirits and the fuel gauge were high.
We met up with Amy Mullen and Megan Otis, two dear friends from the Tyler Place, (the camp Keefe and I worked at this summer) in the adorable suburb of Evanston. They are two native Chicagoians and were invaluable to our experience of the city that Steinbeck considers the gates to the west.
The Mullen's house was an oasis of good food, amazingly generous hosts, annd our own apartment that they used to use for a bed and breakfast. A minor detail Amy forgot to mention is that she lived in a sort of duplex and we would be staying in our own fully furnished, clean, two bedroom apartment connected to her house. We would be forever spoiled by these accommodations before our trip even got fully under way. For dinner we had deep dish pizza, chocolate cake and local beer provided by our new favorite people, the Mullens.
Da Birthday Boi
We woke up the next morning around 10 ready to seize the city. Amy brought down bagels and cream cheese and, we were all comfortably in Megan's pilot by 11:30, cruising towards Lakefront Dr. and the windy city. We made a quick stop by the Bah'hai temple, which was quite impressive architecturally and a pleasant stop to appreciate our fortunate lives.
The city was fantastic! So clean and friendly. Maybe it was exaggerated by the obvious difference we could see after being so recently in New York, but none of us could stop gushing about Chicago.
We parked close to Millennium Park and instantly became fascinated by The Bean.
aww whata crew
seriously fascinated
We walked to all the various hotspots and had lunch at Portillos aka the worlds best hot dog. Literally.
Satisfied and loving life, we meandered our way back towards the car. As we were leaving a gourmet and ridiculously priced coffee shop, we came upon police cars coming out of every street, sirens, and officers in bullet proof vests shaking their heads at each other. What the hell?! Molly pulled out the ever handy iphone to look up what this could be... Ohh just a bank robbery turning into a PR disaster. Apparently this was the third bank he, the suspect, had robbed within the week. Nbd. Sooo obviously we try to follow the cops. Sadly we didn't see any real drama but we were grinning all the way back to Evanston with the fascination of witnessing any sort of crime scene... Then we went home and drew Rayelks.
Serious action shot
After some naps, showers and dinner of homemade chili (I'm not kidding the Mullens are the s&@t). We headed out for a night in Chi city. A night that extended into the morning. GART:1 Chicago: 0
...
We woke up late Saturday, lounged around, went in the hot tub, complimented the beautiful fall day, and by dinner we were feeling as though we could face the world. We walked into Evanston for some pad-thai at Kozys. The restaurant was definitely cozy, and decorated with quite a random collection of collections.
The next morning we sadly said goodbye to Evanston and Chicago and headed to Galena Illinois.
Thank youu Mullens!
